Na zijn conservatoriumopleiding (orgel, klavecimbel, kerkmuziek) en universiteitsstudie (muziekwetenschap) is Dirk Luijmes op diverse terreinen in de muziekwereld actief. Hij won prijzen bij verschillende (inter)nationale orgelconcoursen – waaronder de European Organ Improvisation Competition. De laatste decennia profileert Dirk zich onder meer als professioneel harmoniumspeler en werd door Luister ‘de Harmoniumspeler des Vaderlands’ genoemd. Meer dan vijfentwintig componisten (onder wie Willem Breuker, Daan Manneke en Guus Janssen) schreven werken voor hem. Als uitvoerend musicus trad hij op van New York tot Vilnius (Litouwen) en van Santiago de Chile tot Bergen (Noorwegen). Zo was hij te horen met het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, het RIAS Kammerchor, het Nederlands Kamerkoor, en ensembles als Amsterdam Sinfonietta, het ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble, Oxalys en Het Collectief.

Luijmes was te beluisteren op toonaangevende podia als het Concertgebouw te Amsterdam, de Musikverein in Wenen en Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires). In 2010 verzorgde hij in Carnegie Hall (New York) de Amerikaanse première van het voor hem geschreven First Harmonium Concerto van Martijn Padding, begeleid door het ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble o.l.v. Reinbert de Leeuw. Luijmes is artistiek leider van Stichting Longen & Tongen, werkt als tekstschrijver (voor het Concertgebouw) en werkte als radiomaker (bij de NCRV en IKON). Daarnaast nam hij diverse cd’s op, o.a. met een door hem ontdekte suite van Froberger. Zijn opname van het Harmoniumconcerto kreeg in 2011 een Edison. Ook de cd waarop hij Capella Amsterdam in Janaceks Otce nas begeleid, kreeg een Edison.

In het voorjaar 2019 bracht hij bij Quintone zijn 4-cdbox Harmonium Atlas uit, die in de Volkskrant 5 sterren kreeg en door Luister met een 10 werd bekroond. In het najaar van 2019 hield hij met succes Paddings Clavichordconcert “This is a loud world” ten doop.

Dirk Luijmes, who took conservatory degrees in organ, harpsichord and church music and a university degree in musicology, is active in various fields in the music world. He won prizes at a number of (inter)national organ contests, including the European Organ Improvisation Competition. In recent decades he has come to the fore as one of very few musicians in the world who perform professionally on the harmonium. More than twenty-five composers have written works for him, including Willem Breuker, Daan Manneke and Guus Janssen. As a performing musician he has appeared from New York to Vilnius (Lithuania) and from Santiago de Chile to Bergen (Norway). He has worked with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the RIAS Chamber Choir, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and ensembles including Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble and Oxalys.

Luijmes has collaborated in various special productions, including the world premiere of the 1919 version of Stravinsky’s Les Noces, performed for the Dutch royal family. He has played in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Musikverein (Vienna) and the Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires). In 2010 he gave the American premiere in New York's Carnegie Hall of Martijn Padding's First Harmonium Concerto, written specially for him, accompanied by the ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble under Reinbert de Leeuw. Luijmes is artistic director of Stichting Longen & Tongen, is active as a text writer (for the Amsterdam Concertgebouw) and for many years produced programmes for Dutch radio. He has recorded various CDs, including a suite by Froberger that he discovered himself. His recording of Padding's Harmonium Concerto with ASKO-Schönberg received an Edison Award in 2011. The CD on which he accompanies Capella Amsterdam in Janacek's Otce nas was likewise crowned with an Edison. His 4-cd box Harmonium Atlas (spring 2019) got many good reviews in Dutch quality papers.
